Have you ever heard of #GivingTuesday? It’s the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, or more appropriately, the Tuesday after Black Friday and Cyber Monday. It began a couple years ago as a global day of giving in the middle of the holiday season. It’s a day of giving back and empowering communities during the most charitable season of the year. In fact, over $177 million was raised worldwide across 98 countries just last year! Crazy, right?
#GivingTuesday is on November 28, 2017 and the Lutheran Center is excited to be taking part in it! We love this idea because in a season of “get, gotta have, buy it all”, this day creates space to step back and give back to the needs of the community around you. It invites us to act upon the gratitude we experience at Thanksgiving and calls us to be good stewards of the Advent season, our time, and our money.
So this year, we are asking you (yes, you!) to give $10 on #GivingTuesday to student ministry at the Lutheran Center.
- That $10 will go toward Sunday community meals every week after service.
- That $10 will allow Gary the freedom and materials needed to create a unique liturgy and write his own sermon for the Wednesday night student-led service.
- That $10 will help support Vicar Ashlin as she discerns how she sees herself as a leader of the church and its community and lives into her call as an ordained Pastor.
And here’s the crazy part – if everyone participated with just $10 on #GivingTuesday, we could support students at The Lutheran Center for the rest of the year!
For example, if every one of The Lutheran Center’s Facebook followers gave $10, we could raise over $7,000! That keeps our ministry serving students for 14 days, nearly half a month! AND if every Lutheran Center alumni gave $10, we could raise over $30,000, serving students for 60 days!
Your $10 gift makes such a difference when the community comes together. So invite your friends and colleagues to join in on the fun and impact the lives of young adults at UNL. They need your support as they grow and discern their call as disciples of Jesus Christ in this world.
Don’t forget to put November 28th on your calendars (this is a great way to use that reminder app Apple gives you!). That way, in the midst of the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, you can be reminded to give back to students like Gary and Vicar Ashlin.
When you participate in #GivingTuesday, you’re participating in a global philanthropic endeavor. Will you join us? To learn more about #GivingTuesday, you can visit www.givingtuesday.org.
